TENS of thousands of Muslims across Qatar observed the first day of Ramadan yesterday with great religious fervour.
Men and women offered Taraweeh prayer (special evening prayer) at mosques across the country.
Government offices, schools and many private companies are having reduced working hours.
Mass lftar parties, sponsored by leading charitable organisations, started from the very first day. lftar parties are being held at most major mosques throughout the country by different organisations such as Zakat Fund, Qatar Charity, Qatar Red Crescent and other expatriate forums.
A massive air-conditioned Iftar Tent has been erected in Doha Jadeed which could accommodate up to 1,000 people.
Arab Bank Roundabout became the hub of all pre-Iftar activities with more than a dozen vendors selling a wide range of fried and grilled items.
“This is the best time of the year for me, because it’s a blessed time and usually business is brisk as well,” said Amjad, who was preparing fried potato chips, kebabs and samosas for a long queue of people.
During the holy month, a series of Islamic lectures will also be delivered. The Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs and socio-cultural forums of Muslim expatriates have invited several scholars from around the world on the occasion.
Meanwhile, hypermarkets and supermarkets saw a much anticipated rush on the eve of Ramadan.
Travel agencies and road trip contractors have seen a marked increase in the number of passengers going to Saudi Arabia to perform Umrah during the holy month, especially the last ten days.
